Review: Aveeno® Positively Smooth Shower & Shave Cream

aveeno_showercream.gifWhat They Say: "This 2-in-1 moisturizing shower and shave cream goes beyond cleansing to help minimize the feel and appearance of hair. You have that just-shaved feeling longer. This creamy cleanser, specially formulated with skin silkening Natural Soy, softens and conditions hair and helps you shave less often. This special moisturizing formula provides a rich lather to gently cleanse and helps protect against nicks and cuts from shaving. The result is softer, smoother, healthier skin for longer."

        • Helps you shave less often
        • Helps prevent nicks and cuts
        • With natural soy
        • Dermatologist recommend

Apply directly onto hand, wash cloth or pouf. Work into lather and apply to wet skin. Gently cleanse or shave where needed and rinse clean.

What Lisa Says: I found this to be a great addition to my shower. The creamy feel and fresh clean fragrance (with a hint of citrus) was very refreshing. The lather is rich but not super sudsy which I like. While I didn't really find that I shaved any less often or that the hair on my legs was any softer, I did find that my skin was not only smooth and silky as promised, but that it stayed so longer than usual. I also experienced fewer nicks and ingrown hairs. Add all this to the fact that I'm in favor of anything that helps to eliminate an extra bottle or two in the shower and this 2-in-1 product is a great inexpensive way to feel super smooth. For the price and performance I couldn't be happier.

Neutrogena Rainbath® Shower & Shave Body Wash

neutrosshave.jpgWhat They Say: "...the ideal 2-in-1 body wash and shave gel! Enjoy gentle cleansing and silky-smooth shaving in one simple step.

As a body wash, this fresh, marine-scented gel is enriched with ingredients that clean and moisturize your skin without leaving behind a heavy residue. As a shave gel, the silky lubrication helps your razor glide smoothly over your skin while soothing aloe helps prevent dryness and irritation. This clean-rinsing formula won't build up on your razor--or your skin."

Melissa Says: I can't believe I hadn't tried this before. It leaves skin wonderfully soft with a subtle fresh, clean scent. The fact that it doesn't create an oily feeling on your skin is the plus side to it not being super-moisturizing, and yet it manages to leave your skin very comfortable. It's an easy, light body cleanser.

As a shave gel, only two good pumps is plenty to provide lather on each leg. The result is a close shave that doesn't leave any redness or itchy irritation at all on my legs, which are very sensitive to shaving products.

I absolutely love this do-it-all product, and so does my skin!

Retail Price: $7.99 (at drugstores everywhere)

Review: Gillette Venus Breeze

venusbreeze.jpgWhat They Say: "Venus Breeze is the latest shaving innovation from the number one female shaving brand that is used by more than 40 million women around the world. Enhanced with rich body butters and a fresh tropical scent, the new Venus Breeze shaving system eliminates the need for shaving cream or soap. Simply wetting the razor activates the Shave Gel Bars for a light lather and smooth glide. The razor also has an enhanced gripping surface for
outstanding control and easy handling."

Melissa Says: I must admit, I was afraid to try this. I've used the original Venus (several years ago) and thought it nicked my skin way too much. This one started out promising - smooth feel initially with the attached gel tabs surrounding the razor blades, and what appeared to be a close shave. Later, some little areas stung as I noticed some catching on the skin, though no cuts or visible nicks resulted. I also realized that some spots needed to be re-done, because once the gel, which toward the end started to have a bit of a gooey texture, was rinsed away, my skin didn't feel quite as smooth as I'd originally thought. After the bath, my legs felt a little conditioned, but I could notice quite a few little areas where I didn't have a clean shave.

Overall, not the very best razor I've tried, and I find it hard to imagine the gel tabs lasting over three shaves. I'm still conviced that the men's brand razor I use works best.

Bikini Kitty Clean-Up Kit

What They Say: "Bikini Kitty's system includes exfoliation and proper shave tricks that include-

From the Japanese Bath House: Dry, pre-shower body brushing
Natural, active ingredients: Fruit-hydroxy exfoliants
'Retro' shave techniques: Razor Oil and Single Blade Razors
Maximizing soothing hydration: Cucumber distillate, NON-foaming shave gel
Post shave soothing: Neem oil and Willow Bark skin calming lotion

Bikini Kitty's greatest advantage is the ability to get a great bikini area shave WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW YOU like it... in the privacy of your own home. And if you are a bit more high maintenance, Bikini Kitty also works great for waxers - between and as a prep for getting a great wax. No matter how you tidy-up - Bikini Kitty will help you eliminate ingrown hair!

Bikini Kitty Kits are as cute as they are effective. They make a great honeymoon gift, travel gift - especially for those tropical vacations in the dead of winter! Cruise Season is Bikini Kitty's busiest time of year! Bikini Kitty will help to make ANY baring garment, bikinis (or lingerie), look sooo much better! You can always be public-presentable with Bikini Kitty at your side!"

Jen's Experience: Want a bikini line product that really covers all the bases? This is definitely something worth checking out. The full clean up kit is a bag of goodies containing everything you need to exfoliate, shave and soothe.

The exfoliating products include a brush that you use on your dry skin to keep in-grown hairs at bay. The Everyday Magic Spray (which, I'll be honest, I didn't use all that often...I didn't need it because of the effectiveness of the other products) is a fruit-based exfoliator that can help unclog follicles to keep those in-grown hairs away.

The set includes two disposable razors that on first inspection seem, well, ludicrously cheap, but they're actually there for a reason. Apparently the single-bladed razors help to get a nice smooth shave, especially when paired with their No-Nick Razor Oil and Smooth Shave Gel.

To finish up, the set also includes a Razor Burn Soothing Lotion that helps to calm down the area after you shave. Again, I very rarely even felt the need to use this part of the kit because I got such a nice shave with just the razor, oil and shaving lotion. But, when I did, it certainly helped to keep the razor burn at bay. (Much better than deodorant, my previous weapon of choice!)

Overall, a very cute kit that really does what it claims. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is serious about maintenance of the hair down there. It's a little more work than I'm used to, but the results are worlds above anything I've achieved with at-home products in the past.

Maine Shave Intimate Moments Shaving Cream

Note:This product is not yet on the shelves, but rumour has it that it will be stocked at Victoria's Secret stores this fall. More details about pricing and where to get it when it's released!

What They Say: "Experience a shaving cream that's as effective as waxing yet extraordinarily gentle. A shaving cream made from pure and natural ingredients that leaves skin softer, silkier, sexier than you ever dreamed it could be. A shaving cream especially created for your most intimate encounters.

From ankles to underarms to bikini area, this shaving cream helps you take it all off. A rich, gentle base of shea butter and palm oil sugar softens delicate skin, while natural nutrients protect against rashes and ingrown hairs. All that's left after shaving is your skin -- soft, sexy and smooth.

Because Intimate Moments Shaving Cream is 100% natural, it doesn't lather. Instead, just a tiny dab creates a rich, creamy base that glides over skin, and makes it easy to see where you're shavig. Best of all, Intimate Moments Shaving Cream has no harsh artificial ingredients -- only the soft, subtle scent of its all-natural ingredients.

Jen's Experience: There's something about specialty shaving products that I find really luxurious, and this one in particular really sets the bar high. From the pretty packaging to the light but clean scent, this product wins a permanent place in the precious real estate of my shower shelves. The cream is rich and applies like a thick body moisturizer, but since only a small amount is needed, it's easy to see what needs to be shaved. It will leave your skin feeling super smooth; it seems to deliver a much closer shave than my drugstore standard, Skintimate. Strangely, I haven't noticed that I have to shave less frequently due to the close shave, but I will say, my shaving schedule is a lot more pleasant with this cream on hand!

Archipelago Botanicals Shaving Cream

What They Say: "Archipelago Botanicals Shaving Milk is rich in natural Soy Proteins and Wheat Milk that protect sensitive skin from the nicks, scrapes, and burns associated with everyday shaving. The slippery Jojoba Ester base allows for a uniquely close and clean shave -- leaving skin hydrated, silky-smooth, and razor burn free."

Jen's Experience: I love the scent of the Archipelago Botanicals bath products so much. I mean, as soon as they make a perfume, I will be all over it. So when I saw this shaving cream, I had to try it even with the $16 price tag. I bought it mostly for the scent, but was very pleasantly surprised when I found that it's also a really terrific shaving cream. The shave was really close and I experienced absolutely no irritation. However, much like their Soy Bath Milk, it makes a major mess of my bathtub. I think it may cause build-up in my drains. Is it worth the mess? And the price? I don't know. But I am happily going to keep trying their Milk line until I find one that feeds my need for the Soy Milk scent without the big mess.
